I’m sure many of you are aware of Hublot’s association with top athletes, such as Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, and soccer legends Diego Maradona and Pele, not to mention watches devoted to entire teams, such as French football club Paris Saint-Germain.
This year, Hublot paid homage to a different type of legend, the late Nelson Mandela, collaborating with the House of Mandela Foundation.
Cased in Hublot’s proprietary King Gold, which is an alloy that melds gold with a smattering of platinum, the Classic Fusion comes in two models , a gentlemen’s timepiece, as well as a ladies’, which has a diamond set bezel.
Both models are made in a special edition limited to just 95 pieces, a reference to the president’s age at the time of his death.
The gold-engraved dial bears the totem of the Mandela family, a bee with outstretched wings, symbolising the many branches of the Mandela family. The sapphire case back has an illustration of the African continent, with a hand and motto stating, “It’s in our hands.” A portion of the profits go towards the House of Mandela Foundation.
